MCR Points and Chapter Awards

COVID-19 and MCR points

In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and schools converting to a virtual environment, we will be modifying the manner in which we review Monthly Chapter Reports and awarding well rounded, excellent, and superior chapter status. Chapters are still strongly encouraged to hold virtual events and submit MCR's every month.

International Chapter Awards

The International Chapter Awards were created to encourage each chapter to actively engage in and thoughtfully develop the six vital areas of participation in Gamma Iota Sigma: Chapter Management, Membership Development, GammaSAID Diversity & Inclusion, Alumni Relations, Public Relations, and Community Service. These awards may be conferred on any collegiate chapter submitting an application and providing specific examples as to how their chapter met the stated criteria. Each application for the individual awards must include answers to ALL questions listed.

Applications are due June 1. There is no limit to the number of International Chapter Awards that can be awarded by the Grand Chapter.

Black & Gold Awards

The Black & Gold Awards were created to encourage each chapter to develop projects and programs considered creative and which serve as examples for all other local chapters to follow.

Please remember, the objective of the Black and Gold Awards is to present an event or resource for review to the Awards Committee, that can be easily packaged and repurposed for use by other chapters while demonstrating the creativity and hard work of your chapter.

IMPORTANT: All applications should be submitted using the B&G Template, which can then be uploaded using the application below.

Individual Awards

Individual Awards were created to recognize the hard work, dedication, and unique talents and skills exemplified by our students. The applications and a complete description of each award can be found below.

Alan C. Williams Leadership Award:

  • The Alan C. Williams Leadership Award has been established to recognize the one individual member of Gamma Iota Sigma that sets the best example for all other members and is our best "ambassador" to the insurance, risk management, and/or actuarial science industries at the international level as well as at the local and regional levels. In other words, the Alan C. Williams Leadership Award is the highest honor an individual member can receive from the Grand Chapter. Further, the award will be presented only when a qualified candidate exists. The scholarship recipient is announced the Annual International Conference and the winner is presented with a check for $2,000.

Anita Benedetti Memorial Award:

  • The Anita Benedetti Memorial Award was created in 1996 in memory of Anita Benedetti who was one of our nation's foremost advocates of risk management education. Ms. Benedetti spent 18 years with RIMS and was appointed Deputy Executive Director in 1993. She was also president of the Spencer Foundation, which promotes the study of risk management and has awarded more than 580 scholarships since it was founded in 1979. During Ms. Benedetti's tenure, its assets grew to nearly $2,000,000. Ms. Benedetti was also a member of Gamma Iota Sigma's National Board of Trustees and was instrumental in establishing the blossoming relationship between RIMS and Gamma Iota Sigma.

Successful chapter, family, and community contributions will hold a higher priority for the recipient than solely individual recognition. The scholarship recipient will receive a monetary award. Applicants must be nominated by their local chapter and submit this application to the Grand Chapter no later than June 1.

Thomas J. Miles Award:

  • The Thomas J. Miles Award was created in 2007 to honor the contributions to Gamma Iota Sigma of Tom Miles, professor emeritus of Central Michigan University and longtime advisor of the Nu Chapter. Dr. Miles helped to establish the first Gamma Iota Sigma chapter comprised solely of actuarial science students, and he was instrumental in developing ways in which Gamma Iota Sigma can better serve the interests of actuarial science students. Dr. Miles consistently provided the leadership and teamwork needed to further the mission of Gamma Iota Sigma. His integrity and caring for his students set an example for all to follow. In recognition of Dr. Miles’ career, the Miles Award has been established to recognize the one individual member of Gamma Iota Sigma that best represents the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service exemplified by Dr. Miles. The recipient shall be an actuarial science student, and the award shall be presented only when a qualified candidate exists. Any member of the Grand Chapter or local chapters may nominate a collegiate member of Gamma Iota Sigma for this award. The nomination and supporting documentation must be submitted no later than June 1.
