Officer Resource Toolkit

Leadership Skills and People Management

Student Officers are the backbone of every local GIS chapter and we understand that being a leader is not always easy! Student leaders should be prepared to face various challenges that may arise – from people management to chapter operations. Review the below advice and feel free to reach out to the Grand Chapter at any time if you need any assistance with people management.

Tips for Success

  • Lead by example.

  • Communicate effectively (don't assume everyone is on the same page).

  • Listen to your fellow officers and chapter members.

  • Encourage everyone to speak/share.

  • Understand your chapter member needs.

  • Encourage creativity.

  • Dress accordingly (better to be overdressed than underdressed!)

  • Keep your promises.

  • Show compassion and care.

  • Trust your team and give the benefit of the doubt.

  • Officer Executive Board culture is often driven by the President, so be aware that you're influencing those around you.

  • Speak less and listen more.

  • Give freedom and be flexible (do not micromanage).

  • Find ways to increase efficiency and reduce unnecessary work.

  • Hold people accountable.

  • Ask for feedback and constructive criticism.

  • Understand your leadership style.

  • Admit when you are wrong.

  • Give credit where it's due.

  • Inspire and motivate your officers and chapter members.

  • Have a positive attitude.

  • Have fun!
