Officer Resource Toolkit

Alumni Relations

The transition process between student to working professional is extremely exciting (and nerve-racking!) for graduating members as they prepare to enter the insurance industry full-time! GIS has alumni council chapters in 25+ different cities, and you can leverage these chapters to engage the industry and kickstart your professional career. As an Officer, ensure that your local chapter stays in touch with graduating members and keep them involved in your chapter events and activities.

Benefits of Having an Alumni Relations Officer

  • Actively seek alumni engagement opportunities for your chapter.

  • Ensure that your chapter is aware of all alumni in your area.

  • Update and maintain a database of GIS alumni.

  • Ensure that the Grand Chapter receives all graduating member data at the end of each semester.

  • Create content (i.e. a newsletter or fundraising efforts) that can be sent to alumni.

  • Educate juniors and seniors about the importance of GIS engagement after graduation and updating information as they progress in their careers.

Where Can I Find My Chapter Alumni Data?

At the end of each semester, the Grand Chapter asks all local chapters to capture any member graduating information and submit it via a Monthly Chapter Report. If your chapter submitted any alumni contact details, it can be found in the alumni folder in your chapter's SharePoint siteMore details on how to capture graduating member data can be found here

Alumni Engagement Ideas

  • When looking for potential speakers at your chapter events, review the Alumni folder in your SharePoint site to obtain any graduate contact information that previous officers captured and submitted.

  • Create a "Where Are They Now" social media initiative to feature your chapter alumni and their current companies on your chapter's social media platforms.

  • Plan an Alumni Panel speaker event via Zoom for your next general body meeting.

  • Reach out to an Alumni Council chapter near you and ask for an alumni speaker.

  • Always invite alumni to participate in all of your local chapter events and activities.

How Can I Stay Involved After Graduation?

Join the GIS Alumni Council! GIS Alumni Council chapters across the country gather regularly for networking events, community service, social gatherings, and to mentor local college students. Check out the alumni chapter listing and contact the Regional Director(s) to join a chapter near you. Consider becoming a Regional Director and starting a chapter if there isn't one nearby.

If you're open to speaking opportunities, review the GIS chapter map and reach out to chapters in your local area. Let the President and Faculty Advisor know that you're in the area and available to speak at upcoming chapter events, should the student officers need a speaker. Also offer to participate in any upcoming planned events.
