Edison L. Bowers Award: Established in 1972, the Edison L. Bowers Award is the oldest and most coveted of the international awards conferred by the Grand Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma. The Bowers Award was created to recognize the one Gamma Iota Sigma chapter that demonstrated the an exceptional, well-rounded and organized program the past scholastic year. The Bowers Award is the highest honor a collegiate chapter can receive from Grand Chapter. In determining the collegiate chapter which best reflects the overall goals and objectives of Gamma Iota Sigma, the Grand Chapter carefully scrutinizes the information submitted by each chapter in their Monthly Reports.
National Awards: In 1972, the Grand Chapter initiated the Edison L. Bowers Award as a method to recognize and encourage collegiate chapter excellence. As the fraternity grew and matured, the Grand Chapter soon realized, that although each year only one chapter could be selected as the Bowers Award winner, many chapters were developing exceptional programs in various Bowers Award categories. It was felt these efforts should be appropriately encouraged, as they were basic and vital to the growing professional stature of Gamma Iota Sigma. To help guide each collegiate chapter towards improving specified areas of performance, five additional awards have been created: (these will be awarded to all chapters that submit and meet the required criteria for each award)
Membership Development Award The Membership Development award provides special recognition to those collegiate chapters able to document a demonstrated commitment to chapter growth, membership maturation and chapter perpetuation
Chapter Management Award The Chapter Management Award was developed to encourage effective chapter management and officer leadership skills.
Community Service Award The Community Service award was developed to encourage all collegiate chapters to establish and cultivate a program promoting Community Service
Alumni Relations Award The Alumni Relations award was developed to encourage all collegiate chapters to establish a participatory relationship with alumni members of the fraternity.
Public Relations Award The Public Relations award was developed to encourage all collegiate chapters to establish and cultivate a program promoting a positive image of Gamma Iota Sigma as a national professional fraternity within the campus and greater public communities.
Black and Gold Award: Grand Chapter has created the “Black and Gold Award” to encourage each chapter to develop projects and programs considered creative, and which serve as an example for all other local chapters to follow. The award will be presented to any chapter for single achievements or events considered exceptional and possible only through extensive planning, organization and participation by a significant number of the chapter’s members.
Warren L. Weeks Scholarship: The Warren L. Weeks scholarship is given to encourage individual member (a) leadership and (b) furthering of fraternity goals. It is a tribute to the memory of an outstanding teacher and insurance industry leader. The scholarship recipient will receive $350.
Anita Benedetti Memorial Award: The Anita Benedetti Memorial Award was created in 1996 in memory of Anita Benedetti who was one of our nation's foremost advocates of risk management education. Anita spent 18 years with RIMS and was appointed Deputy Executive Director in 1993. She was also president of the Spencer Foundation, which promotes the study of risk management and has awarded more than 175 scholarships since it was founded in 1979.
Elizabeth Lange/Microsoft Scholarship: Mr. Scott Lange, then Risk Manager for Microsoft, to honor in perpetuity the exceptional family and community contributions of his wife, established the Elizabeth Lange/Microsoft Scholarship Endowment in 1998. The scholarship is intended to recognize a member of a Gamma Iota Sigma collegiate chapter best exemplifying the personal character and values of Elizabeth Lange. Successful chapter, family and community contributions will hold a higher priority for the recipient than solely individual recognition. The scholarship amount awarded will be equal to the total interest earned on the endowment fund each year.
The Alan C. Williams Leadership Award: As the Edison L. Bowers Award recognized the chapter that has best exemplified the values of Edison L. Bowers and the goals of Gamma Iota Sigma, the Alan C. Williams Leadership Award has been established to recognize the one individual member of Gamma Iota Sigma that sets the best example for all other members and is our best "ambassador" to the insurance, risk management, and/or actuarial science industries at the international level as well as at the local and regional levels. In other words, the Alan C. Williams Leadership Award is the highest honor an individual member can receive from the Grand Chapter. Further, the award will be presented only when a qualified candidate exists.
The Thomas J. Miles Award: The Thomas J. Miles award was created in 2007 to honor the contributions to Gamma Iota Sigma of Tom Miles, professor emeritus of Central Michigan University and longtime advisor of the Nu Chapter. Dr. Miles helped to establish the first Gamma Iota Sigma chapter comprised solely of actuarial science students, and he was instrumental in developing ways in which Gamma Iota Sigma can better serve the interests of actuarial science students.
In recognition of Dr. Miles’ career, the Miles Award has been established to recognize the one individual member of Gamma Iota Sigma that best represents the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service exemplified by Dr. Miles. The recipient shall be an actuarial science student, and the award shall be presented only when a qualified candidate exists.
The Gerald L. Smith Jr. Alumni Scholarship: The Gerald L. Smith Jr. Alumni Scholarship Award was created to allow the alumni of Gamma Iota Sigma to financially compensate a student member by fostering a research activity. Essay topic is announced each year. The scholarship recipient will receive $1000.
